Background Information – Job-specific

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces considerable challenges in access to health care; only 40% of the population has access to a health center; 30% of health centers have adequate infrastructure, 32% have electricity and 6% have a water source and the majority of health centers (83%) lack necessary medical equipment. 

The objective of the KOICA project is to improve access to health and health services, particularly maternity and pediatric services, in Kwango province by building 15 health centers to replace those currently built with unsustainable materials and adding wards to 2 existing general hospitals in Boko and Kimbau. The construction of health centers and pavilions will increase the capacity of the establishment to receive and treat patients. The project also aims to increase the quality of care received and improve the functionality of centers in health establishments. Under this project, UNOPS is looking for interns with the aim of providing young graduates with the opportunity to gain knowledge, experience and pave the way for their professional growth and career development . More specifically, the engineering interns will participate in the following tasks under the close supervision and advice of the Project Manager assisted by the Supervising Engineer.

Functional Responsibilities

  1.  Construction supervision 
  • Participate in the execution of construction work while respecting the provisions of the contract and design specifications,
  • Contribute and participate in quantity and quality control (such as concrete slump testing, cube sampling, cube crushing, reinforcement spacing/number/size and coverage, etc., the vibration of concrete, etc.) as well as compliance with the schedule,
  • Under the supervision of the supervising engineer, verify that the work complies with the technical specifications of the project and immediately report any deviations,
  • Help the project implement field measures to ensure 100% compliance with the UNOPS HSSE policy on site,
  • Participate in work inspections and record this inspection at specific stages during the life of the construction in accordance with project specifications,
  • Contribute to the general management of the implementation of construction works to ensure they are completed on time, within budget and quality standards,
  • Support project activities with regular supervision of the progress of the work and the quality of the project in order to meet delivery deadlines,
  • Assist in preparing project and contract related documentation including periodic progress reports, site reports, stakeholder meeting minutes, engineer instructions and change orders, invoice verification reports of the entrepreneur, certifications, product delivery documents to the partner and end of contract reports,
  • Take images and videos as needed and ensure they are archived correctly.

 2. Knowledge and partner management

  • Assist in providing training and ensuring technology transfer to national staff and contractor personnel. Provide them with advice on good construction practices and environmental management, as well as on health and safety standards to be respected during construction, 
  • Contribute to the dissemination and sharing of good practices and lessons learned in terms of development planning and knowledge building, 
  • Support good collaboration with local authorities and other project partners 

EDUCATION

  • An engineering degree is required, obtained during the last three years preceding the closing date of this call for applications. The field of study should preferably be in civil engineering, structural engineering, construction management or any other related field.

EXPERIENCE

  • No previous work experience is required.
  •  Field experience of at least 1 year would be a considerable asset.
  • Having experience working in the United Nations system or in an international organization would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of architectural and engineering design software such as AutoCAD is an asset.

LANGUAGE

  • Perfect command of French (spoken, read and written) is required
  • Fluency in English (spoken, read and written) is an asset.
  • Fluency in Lingala (spoken) is an asset.
