The African Futures & Innovation Programme (AFI) at the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seeks a communication consultant skilled in writing and editing, social media and digital communication.
All AFI work revolves around the African Futures website. The consultant will help increase visibility, event attendance and use of all aspects of the website. Other tasks include overseeing the AFI weekly newsletter and blog, and high-level liaison with experts globally to solicit website contributions and arrange events.
The position requires journalistic writing skills and an interest in current affairs, attention to detail, an eye for design, problem-solving skills and the ability to work quickly and to deadline. The consultant will report to the AFI Programme Head.
Overview of duties
- Write on-point messaging about AFI’s work and post regular and timely content on social media platforms, including live from events
- Source authors for AFI website content, including the Africa Tomorrow blog
- Prepare and disseminate mailers
- Support AFI staff media engagement and conduct media monitoring
- Support visual communication, including the production of infographics and other content
- Help produce multimedia content, including impact stories
- Help plan and coordinate AFI communication strategies in line with ISS’ communication strategy
- Stakeholder liaison
Overview of requirements
- A qualification in communication, journalism, public relations, communication studies or marketing
- 3–5 years’ work experience in communication or the media
- Understanding of the non-profit environment
- A strong track record of effectively using social media platforms
- Experience or interest in videography and graphic design
- Excellent English verbal and written skills
- Ability to think creatively and input ideas
- Attention to detail

Skilled in using Microsoft packages including: MSWord, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Mailchimp. Competence in and willingness to learn Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and video editing an advantage.
Time frames
This is a part-time position requiring two to three days’ work per week. The contract will initially be for 3 months from January to March 2024, after which it may be extended for the remainder of 2024.
